What's Covered

Every pointing & repointing job,
four basics covered.

Scope scales with the job. These four are the spine of every pointing & repointing engagement.

01

Lime Mortar Repointing

For Victorian, Edwardian and earlier brick. Hot-lime or hydraulic lime mortars mixed on site, matched to the existing in colour and finish. The right mortar for a soft brick.

02

Sand-Cement Repointing

For 1930s onwards property and modern brick. Sand-cement mortars at the right strength and colour to match the existing wall. Weatherstruck or bucket-handle finish to your preference.

03

Hand-Raked to Depth

Joints raked out by hand to twice the joint width (typically 18 to 25 mm). Power-saws used only where the joint is too tight for hand tools, and only with the homeowner's say-so.

04

Period Property

Long-standing experience on Victorian and Edwardian North London terraces. Sympathetic to the original brick, careful around painted detail and stone dressings.

Frequently Asked

Common questions,
plainly answered.

Why is the right mortar mix so important?

A hard cement mortar on a soft Victorian brick will damage the brick face every freeze-thaw cycle. The mortar should always be weaker than the brick, so it gives up first. For period property, hydraulic or hot-lime mortar is the right choice.

What does "weatherstruck" mean?

The mortar joint is finished at a slight downward angle so that rain runs off the bed joint instead of sitting on the brick below. Common on Victorian and Edwardian terraces.

Should I avoid power tools?

For Victorian property and earlier, yes, for the joint rake-out. Power saws can cut into the brick face and leave a visible saw mark. We hand-rake all joints on period property unless the homeowner specifically asks otherwise.

How long does repointing last?

A correctly specified lime or sand-cement repoint should last 50 to 80 years on a well-maintained elevation. Most "failed" repointing is from the wrong mortar mix, not from age.
